Vermont Legalizes Gay Marriage - By Legislative Vote

Vermont is the first state to take a definitive step in what I believe is the preferable direction for a state seeking to legalize gay marriage.

Instead of relying entirely on the state judiciary, the Vermont legislature passed a law  to establish the institution.

While it's not a constitutional amendment, a law certainly carries a greater stamp of democratic legitimacy, and it will likely represent a more stable, lasting answer to the deep social question of gay marriage in the state.
